Marta is a small village placed on the southern shore of the Bolsena lake, very interesting place with amazing landscapes and full of historical and cultural sites. Marta's birth is very uncertain, some think of a Phoenician influence, others believe that the Etruscans found the village where the main activity, like nowadays, was fishing. What we know for sure is that Marta has always been under the papal influence until, with the establishment of the Reing of Italy, it will go under the district of Rome and after under Viterbo. The surrounding territory is full of recent and non recent historical sites along with landscapes of rare beauty. The historical centre in Marta, of medieval origin, still preserves ancient traits that are very charming. The ancient streets, which offer beautiful views of the lake to the visitors, go up to the octagonal clock tower whose tradition wants that was built with stones taken from the ruins of Bisanzio, very powerful etruscan city that was placed a few kilometers from Marta. Marta is famous for the popular feasts among which stands out the centennial Barabbata in the month of May, and right after the fair of the "lattarino" in which the deliciousness of a fresh water fried anchovy makes this fair one among the ten most important througout Italy. The grape coltures of our hills produce a red-colored dessert wine called cannaiola, once forgotten but now celebrated in the month of July, attracting more and more visitors each year.
